Care & Maintenance Guide

Your Dwarves Bag is crafted from premium materials designed to last a lifetime. With proper care and maintenance, your bag will develop a unique character and patina that tells your story. Follow these guidelines to keep your bag looking its best.

General Care Tips for All Bags

Daily Care

  • Avoid overloading: Respect your bag's capacity to maintain its shape and prevent stress on seams and handles
  • Keep dry: Protect from rain and moisture when possible. If your bag gets wet, pat dry with a soft cloth and air dry naturally
  • Store properly: When not in use, stuff with tissue paper to maintain shape and store in the dust bag provided
  • Rotate usage: If you own multiple bags, rotate them to allow leather to rest and breathe
  • Handle with clean hands: Oils and dirt from hands can transfer to leather over time

What to Avoid

  • Direct sunlight or heat sources (can cause fading and drying)
  • Plastic bags for storage (leather needs to breathe)
  • Harsh chemicals, alcohol-based cleaners, or baby wipes
  • Hanging by straps for extended periods (can cause stretching)
  • Contact with rough surfaces that may scratch the leather

Material-Specific Care Instructions

Cowhide & Calfskin

Cleaning: Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a leather cleaner specifically designed for smooth leather.
Conditioning: Apply leather conditioner every 3-6 months to keep leather supple and prevent cracking.
Stain removal: Address stains immediately with a specialized leather stain remover. Test in an inconspicuous area first.
Patina: These leathers develop a beautiful patina over time - embrace the natural aging process!

Sheepskin

Cleaning: Use a soft brush or cloth to remove surface dirt. For stains, use a cleaner specifically formulated for delicate leather.
Conditioning: Sheepskin is naturally soft but benefits from occasional conditioning with a gentle leather cream.
Special care: This leather is more delicate - avoid excessive rubbing and be extra gentle during cleaning.

Suede Leather

Cleaning: Use a suede brush to gently remove dirt and restore the nap. Brush in one direction only.
Stain removal: Use a suede eraser for dry stains. For wet stains, blot immediately and allow to air dry, then brush.
Protection: Apply a suede protector spray before first use and reapply every few months.
Water damage: If suede gets wet, stuff with paper and air dry away from heat. Brush when completely dry.
Note: Suede is more susceptible to staining - prevention is key!

Horse Leather

Cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed. The unique grain pattern is naturally resistant to minor scratches.
Conditioning: Use a quality leather conditioner every 4-6 months to maintain flexibility.
Character: Horse leather's distinctive grain becomes more pronounced with age - this is a desirable feature!

Vegetable Tanned Leather

Cleaning: Use only water-based cleaners. Avoid oils initially as this leather absorbs easily.
Conditioning: After the first few months of use, apply natural leather oils or conditioners sparingly.
Sun exposure: This leather darkens naturally with sun exposure and use - this is normal and beautiful!
Water Spots: In its early stages, "Veg-Tan" leather is sensitive to water. If it rains, don't panic—as the bag develops its deep amber patina, these spots will eventually blend into a rich, storied surface that is uniquely yours.
Patina development: This leather transforms dramatically over time, developing rich honey and amber tones.

Deerskin

Cleaning: Wipe gently with a damp cloth. Deerskin is naturally water-resistant due to its lanolin content.
Conditioning: Requires minimal conditioning - the natural oils keep it supple.
Flexibility: This leather is incredibly soft and forgiving - it bounces back from creases naturally.

Xiangyunsha (Gambiered Guangdong Silk, The "Soft Gold" Silk)

This is a precious heritage fabric with over 500 years of history. Its characteristic "rustling" sound and metallic sheen are signs of its organic mud-dyeing process.
Cleaning: Spot clean only with a damp cloth. Do not machine wash or dry clean.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve the unique luster.
Handling: Handle with care - this is a delicate, precious fabric with cultural significance.
Water: Avoid prolonged water exposure. If wet, air dry naturally and avoid wringing.
Special note: The characteristic rustling sound and sheen are natural features - not defects!

Seasonal Care

Summer Care

  • Protect from excessive heat and humidity
  • Wipe away sweat or sunscreen residue immediately
  • Store in a cool, dry place with good air circulation

Winter Care

  • Protect from snow and salt - both can stain leather
  • Allow bags to warm to room temperature before cleaning
  • Condition more frequently as indoor heating can dry out leather

Professional Care

For significant stains, damage, or if you're unsure about cleaning, we recommend consulting a professional leather care specialist. Some issues are best handled by experts to avoid permanent damage.

Hardware Care

  • Clean metal hardware with a soft, dry cloth
  • Avoid harsh chemicals that may tarnish or discolor
  • If hardware becomes stiff, a tiny amount of leather conditioner on the moving parts can help
